Thank you for making this year’s conference such an engaging and uplifting event. Your presentations, questions, and conversation are wonderful reminders of the range of innovative scholarship in the history of medicine, science, and technology. I want to thank the planning committee – Jennifer Rogers, Nancy Traylor Heard, and Sarah Halter – for their dedication and hard work, which helped make this such a successful event. I’m also grateful to our Board, whose members continue to offer the insights and experiences that keep SAHMS a vibrant organization.
A large part of our success this year is due to the generous support of Dr. Kylie Smith and her new Center for Healthcare History and Policy, which sponsored several wonderful events: our keynote address by Dr. Richard J. Mizelle, Jr.; our plenary session with Dr. Mizelle and Dr. Tabia Henry Akintobi; and our general session on justice in medical education featuring faculty and students from Emory University. These events have given us a lot to think about as we consider the ways in which our scholarship can (and should) intersect with the pressing questions facing the world today.
We hope to continue building on these conversations later this year with a virtual conference. While plans are still in development, we hope that you will consider attending this 1-day event. Keep an eye out for further details within the next month or so.
The SAHMS Board also is excited to begin thinking about next year’s conference. We invite any feedback you wish to share with us about your experiences this year that will help us in our planning. Please use this form to let us know what went well and what we can think about for 2024.
We are also looking for volunteers who are interested in becoming more involved in the organization. In addition to assisting with the 2024 conference planning, please consider reviewing manuscripts for our journal, evaluating graduate student papers for the 2023 Robert Nesbit Prize, contributing a blogpost to our forthcoming website, or joining our pedagogy group. As new opportunities evolve, we will be in touch to see if there are any new initiatives that are of interest to you.
Finally, I want to thank Jennifer Rogers, our outgoing president, for her many years of service to SAHMS, specifically in the last four years. Additionally, I’m sorry to say goodbye to our journal editor Karen Ross and assistant editor John Rankin, who have done tremendous work in producing a high-quality publication for the last 5 years. Please consider submitting your manuscripts as we welcome our new editor, Lisa Pruitt.
I hope you will reach out to us at sahmsconference@gmail.com if you ever have questions or suggestions for us!
